 This is an exact copy of a 1938 model and is fully lined with a nice roomy "toe box". These have the Aris Allen Raw Sole - (see below) flexible hard leather with a raw, unfinished surface on both sole & heel just like 40's dance shoes. Designed with the swing dancer in mind. CONSTRUCTION: This means that the shoe on your feet is the product of a craftsman who sees the shoe from start to finish. This also explains why you will find the occasional imperfection. These are not stamped out, they are made just a few at a time. And yes, this explains why you will occasionally see your size missing from our site!!!
Sole is flexible to help you feel the floor. These are designed for the intermediate / advanced swing dancer - but they're also great as a second pair for beginners... the "fastness" of the sole forces you to "find your center". SIZING
TIPS: Women: To estimate what you size should get in these shoes: just go down one and a half sizes - Women's 5.5 = Men's 4, 6 = 4.5, 6.5 = 5, 7 = 5.5, 7.5 = 6, 8 = 6.5, 8.5 = 7, 9 = 7.5, 9.5 = 8, 10 = 8.5, etc. |

The Aris
Allen Raw Sole
is made from hard leather with a raw finish. It feels like velvet
and acts a lot like Chrome Leather (suede) - it allows you to
spin and slide, and still control the floor.
NOTE: If you find the sole has picked up dirt from the floor and is slowing down, just shuffle your feet on the sidewalk once or twice to refresh it.
Heel is shown below - note the rubber on top of the leather bottom for shock absorption.

At right is a photograph of the vintage shoe that was copied to make this style. It has a few modifications, the sole is one piece of leather, not two like the original and the welt is not a pronounced, but the design comes right out of the 1938-39 shoe salesman's catalog...
(BTW: Shoe salesmen were known as "Travelers" which is possibly where the Traveler's Insurance company gets its name.)

To quote Nina (at right), the night we handed her a men's Captoe:
"Oh wow, oh wow, hold my hands, [does heel slide], oh wow, now I know why you guys love these, oh wow, hold my hands [another heel slide, does free spin], oh wow!" Repeat.
She wears a women's U.S. size 6.5, and wears Aris Allen men's 5.5 captoes in white.
We were going to call this photo
"The Dip"... but realized that both of these gentlemen
already have Lindy nicknames. (ha ha hoo hoo... actually, they're
far from dippy - if you're very, very lucky you'll get to dance
with one of these gorgeous hunks-a-swingtastic one day!)
